I had the opportunity to ask a few questions from a friend who was a member in a very good band signed to a major Christian record label. Before he was in this band, he was in a pretty successful independent band. He was kind enough to share with me about his experiences. He recently left the band, you’ll read why below.
Folks.. the time is NOW to break out of the old mindset that in order for God to use you in music ministry, you must be signed to a label. The industry is passing away. It’s on it’s last breaths, gasping for cash to keep them alive. See, the music industry doesn’t live on air, it lives on cash.
Happy Independents Day my indie friends!
You know, the best thing about being an independent artist is you can do your thing on your own terms. I was having lunch with one of our Indieheaven members, Sean Smith the other day, and he tells me if a record label would want to sign him he wouldn’t do the deal.
Hi folks!
Check out a video of a teaching I gave at a seminar in Kansas City several months ago. I share how to tell and define the call of God on your life. Hope you enjoy it! Start at the top and work your way down. Grab a cup of coffee and take notes!
It all started when I came home from being out of town for a few days, I had no internet service, our cable modem was kaput! Fortunately for me, one of our neighbors had not protected their wireless so I was able to swipe it with ease (Don’t worry, they said I could). But it was so slow! I did a speed test, and it creeped along like a snail in a puddle of molasses! Was it ever frustrating trying to upload music files. It took me 2 minutes to upload a 3 meg file. Oooh, I bristled with irritation. Then, I remembered the olden days of 28.8 AO-Hell dialup. The days when I first started my musician service back in 1997. Back when I had to upload every single song from our members. Back when I had 500 members and everyone needed me to get their music online. Back when I would hit the send button and go out to get a Big Mac, come back and it was half-way completed!
I’ve been helping independent Christian musicians in their missions since 1996, over 10 years! I’ve always had an independent spirit, some will say I’m a bit of a rebel, a renegade, a loner, driven, even prideful. Well, no wonder! Those are some of the attributes the majority of independent, entrepreneurial people possess. The term “indie” has changed over the years, especially since the recording industry has been changing so drastically recently. Indie used to mean alternative, underground, even inferior. For bands and artists who desired a record deal, indie meant the curse of death.
As you may or may not know, I’m the founder of Indieheaven.com, and have worked with thousands of indie artists since 1997. I think I know what makes indies tick, and have witnessed the same patterns over and over again. Most bad patterns can be avoided with some common sense and realistic expectations.
